WOW

WOW is having a big impact, delivering strong results from small investments.

Pupils record how they get to school on the WOW Travel Tracker and those who walk at least once per week for a month are rewarded with a themed badge.

It's simple to run, fun and easy to take part. Just a few minutes of a teacher's day is all it takes to make a big difference.

And together with our free monthly curriculum-aligned learning resources and assembly presentations, WOW will help develop healthy lifelong habits.

2 reasons to WOW
Family walking

Our interactive Travel Tracker brings WOW to life. In September this year we’re relaunching Travel Tracker with brand new features:

  • Initials or short names will be able to be added to help identify the pupil icons. This will be on an opt-in basis for each school.
  • A printable list of the icons being used for each class, with the addition of pupil short names.
  • Schools will be able to send pupil journey data directly to Modeshift who will use it as part of the STARS awards scheme. Again, this will be on an opt-in basis for each school. (Excludes TfL STARS)
  • The screen used in classrooms to collect journey details will include a changing monthly background to match that month’s badge.

Why WOW?

WOW is having a big impact, delivering strong results from small investments. Schools love taking part, walking and winning badges, and after one year pupils have formed new habits for life.

23%

Increase in pupils' walking rates in the first five weeks.

600,000

Pupils encouraged to walk to school last year in 2,200 schools.

30%

Fewer cars at gates of participating schools, reducing congestion.

£1.43

Cost per pupil per year for a cost-effective and healthy way of traveling to school.

Plus, for schools in the appropriate regions, WOW directly supports Modeshift STARS accreditation.

WOW 2017/18 – Walk the Americas

Each year WOW follows a fun and informative theme. From the badges, designed by the children themselves in our annual design competition through to free monthly learning resources and assembly presentations.

This year’s theme will take children on a journey from the tip of North America, through the vast plains of the United States, via the rainforests of Central America and end with a festival of food and dance in South America.

Walk the Americas

The theme and badges are focused around natural and man-made landscapes, animals, culture and indigenous communities/people and historical events and civilisations.

Each badge has been thoughtfully designed in our badge competition -  this year we received over 120,000 entries - and badges are made from recycled yoghurt-pot material.

We've picked our 2017/18 WOW badges!
