Shanaze Reade has been appointed as the first-ever Cycling and Walking Ambassador for the West Midlands (22 March 2019).

It comes after Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking called on Andy Street, West Midlands Mayor to appoint a senior walking and cycling champion to oversee a transformative behaviour change programme encouraging people of all ages and backgrounds to walk and cycle more

It also follows yesterday’s announcement by the Department for Transport of a £1 million fund to enable and encourage more children to walk to school which will benefit schools across the region. The walk to school programme will be delivered in the West Midlands by Living Streets.

Julia Crear, Regional Director (South), Living Streets comments:

“We are delighted at the appointment of Shanaze Reade as the city region's first-ever Cycling and Walking Ambassador. Not only does this indicate the importance the Mayor attributes to all active travel but it will help the West Midlands realise its ambitious plans to increase walking and cycling across the region

“This is the first step in solving some of public health crises being faced in the region, including having one of the highest rates of obesity in the country and poor air quality contributing to 900 premature deaths each year in Birmingham alone.

“Although Shanaze is famed for her cycling career, we are thrilled to see walking within her remit. We need to be shouting about the benefits of all active travel and the options available for walking and cycling in the region. We’re sure Shanaze will inspire all generations and abilities to move more, helping people from Coventry to Dudley, Walsall to Wolverhampton, Birmingham and beyond to live healthier and happier lives.

“We look forward to working with Shanaze in the coming months and continuing to work with the authority through WOW – our year-round walk to school challenge.”

Living Streets will hold its annual National Walking Summit in Birmingham next week (29 March 2019).
