Living Streets Cymru applauds safer roads thanks to 20mph speed limits
The latest police recorded collision stats, covering July – September 2024, show collisions on Welsh roads at their lowest level for that quarter since records began.
Statistics published by Welsh Government today (30 January 2025) show that around 100 fewer people were killed or seriously injured on roads with 20mph and 30mph road speed limits in the 12-month period following the introduction of the 20mph default speed limit.
Catherine Woodhead, Chief Executive of Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking, comments:
“Living Streets Cymru is delighted that the latest data indicates that 20mph speed limits have saved lives and reduced casualties on our roads.
“While not all drivers are complying with the law, the majority are choosing to slow down, and this latest data shows the positive impact they are having.
“The default 20mph limit is also saving drivers money. UK car insurance prices have fallen by up to 16% in the past 12 months, with experts saying that 20mph zones are a factor in the drop, due to lower levels of claim frequency in these areas.
“This data should encourage other areas to follow Wales’ lead and slow down to save lives.”
