Ahead of today’s Budget (11 March 2020), Living Streets responds to reports that roads and railways will be the focus of transport spending.

Joe Irvin OBE, Chief Executive, Living Streets comments:

“Investing in road-building programmes won’t solve climate change but instead stands to worsen it.

“Road transport is a big contributor to UK greenhouse gases. It also adds to air pollution associated with an estimated 40,000 premature deaths a year, and a cost of £16 billion per year.

“Enabling people to walk more will help fight climate change, toxic air, traffic congestion, poor health and social isolation.

“The forthcoming Spending Review needs to provide the secure long-term funding for walking and cycling needed to create a healthier and cleaner country.”
