Tell your local school about WOW - the walk to school challenge

I have heard about WOW – the walk to school challenge from the charity, Living Streets and think that it is a great initiative that could really benefit our school community. Walking, wheeling, cycling or scooting to school encourages pupils to build strong, healthy lifelong habits. With WOW, children have fun earning collectable WOW badges in the process. 

As well as improving pupils’ health and wellbeing, WOW also benefits the environment by reducing congestion and improving air quality. Schools that take part in WOW see 59% fewer car journeys to the school gates and 18% more walking and wheeling all the way journeys on average.  

Our school may be eligible to receive WOW resources at no cost, however there are also other funding options available. More information can be found at livingstreets.org.uk/WOW.

Not only does WOW encourage pupils to build strong, healthy lifelong habits by walking, wheeling, scooting or cycling to school, but the initiative is pupil-led, empowering children to make a positive difference to both the school and wider community. WOW also provides opportunities for cross-curricular activities both inside and outside of the classroom. 

The benefits of WOW are well documented. In addition to improving pupils’ health and wellbeing, WOW also helps the environment by reducing congestion and improving air quality.  

Schools that take part in WOW see 59% fewer car journeys to the school gates and 18% more walking and wheeling all the way journeys on average. Participating in WOW can also help schools achieve their Healthy Schools status and can form part of a school’s Climate Action Plan 

WOW costs around £2 per pupil, which can be funded through your PE and Sport Premium or through fundraising. Or our school may be eligible to receive WOW resources at no cost, thanks to existing funding. More information can be found at livingstreets.org.uk/WOW.
