New Govt strategy “is a step in the right direction”

The UK Government has launched its new transport strategy today (2 April 2026). ‘Better Connected: a strategy for integrated transport’ sets out a ‘vision for a transport network that works for people and can be relied upon’.

Catherine Woodhead, Chief Executive, Living Streets comments:

“Every journey starts and ends with a walk, so it’s great to see the Government commit to making active journeys easier and more accessible in this strategy. With private motor journeys expected to increase by up to 54% by 2060, we can’t delay in making walking and wheeling the easiest and most convenient choice for all.

“One way to do this is to strengthen pedestrian priority to make walked and wheeled journeys safer. The commitment in the strategy to update legislation to include changes such as new, simpler zebra crossings will support that. With council budgets tight, side road zebras have been proven in trials as a low-cost intervention that increase pedestrian safety when applied at suitable junctions.

“When walking is prioritised, we create better places to live, work and spend time. This strategy is a step in the right direction to realising that vision. We look forward to working with local authority partners as they implement new powers to make our streets safer and more accessible for all.”
