Moray pupil wins competition with 'Road Surfing' badge design
A badge designed by a pupil from Mosstodloch will be worn by pupils throughout the UK this June.
Mosstodloch Primary School is one of 19 schools in Moray and over 2000 schools across Scotland, England and Wales taking part in WOW, Living Streets' walk to school challenge. The programme encourages pupils and their parents to choose active and sustainable methods of transport to school, creating safer environments around schools and giving children a healthy start to their school day. WOW rewards children who travel actively to school with collectable badges at the end of each month.
Every year, Living Streets hosts the WOW badge design competition with the winning designs being made into WOW badges. Nearly 200,000 pupils submitted entries for this year’s theme, Walk with Imagination, which challenged pupils to picture a different walk to school and draw where their imagination took them!
Anna Ogston, from Mosstodloch Primary School designed a 'Road surfing' badge. To celebrate Anna's imaginative design a celebration assembly was held at the school with the Living Streets mascot, Strider. Anna and two friends were also presented with a voucher for a surfing lesson, donated by New Wave Surf school in Lossiemouth.
Anna, the pupil who designed the winning badge, said:
“I imagined that the road turned into water and all the cars turned into surfboards. We are lucky to be surrounded by beautiful beaches and I love swimming in the shallows and going on my Mum’s paddleboard.
"I think it is important to reduce our carbon footprint and travel actively to school. When I travel actively to school, I always feel ready for the day.”
Chris Thompson, Programme Manager, Living Streets said:
“WOW is a brilliant initiative that helps children to stay active, happy and healthy. When more pupils walk or wheel to school, we see fewer cars at the school gates, helping create cleaner and safer streets for all.
“Pupils love taking part in WOW and earning their WOW badges. This year’s theme, ‘Walk with Imagination’, sparked some wonderfully creative entries—and Anna’s winning design truly stood out. Well done, Anna! You should feel proud that your badge will inspire children across Scotland, England, and Wales to walk and wheel more.”
