Kyffin Williams inspired Anglesey walks

Teithiau tywys Kyffin Williams

For our first-ever project based in North Wales, Living Streets Cymru partnered with Oriel Mon to develop and sustain guided walks with artistic interest.

Supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the Yn Awyr Agored (the Open Outdoors) project celebrated the work of the Welsh landscape painter, Sir John Kyffin Williams OBE RA and the Anglesey landscapes that inspired him.

Living Streets Cymru and Oriel Mon collaborated to create three led walks on Anglesey – at Bae Trearddur, Llangefni and Pwllfanogl. The walks support mental and physical wellbeing and connect local people to the work of Kyffin Williams at scenic locations on Anglesey.

A newly designed Kyffin Williams Walking Trail map featuring the three walks launched in summer 2021. It’s available to download in Welsh and English, with hard copies also available for free from Oriel Mon and a number of other Anglesey attractions.

The project was funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund as part of the #15MinuteHeritage programme - thanks to National Lottery players. The project funding supported the development of the walks, the creation of the maps and the training of staff and volunteers to undergo online Walk Leader training and develop their knowledge of Kyffin Williams and the walk routes.

Although the project has finished, there will continue to be regular guided walks offered at each of the three locations featured on the maps, led by Oriel Môn staff and volunteers, as well as the opportunity to volunteer as a Walk Leader.

Mae Living Streets Cymru, sy’n rhan o elusen y DU ar gyfer cerdded o ddydd i ddydd, ac Oriel Môn wedi dod ynghyd i greu teithiau cerdded mewn tri lleoliad yma ym Môn – Bae Trearddur, Llangefni a Pwllfanogl. Mae map cerdded wedi ei gyhoeddi i pobl gallu cerdded ar ei liwt eu hunain yn ogystal. Mae rhain ar gael o’r Oriel ac o nifer o atyniadau eraill yr ynys.

Mae’n brosiect sydd wedi ei ariannu gan Gronfa Treftadaeth y Loteri Genedlaethol fel rhan o’r cynllun #Trysorau’r Filltir Sgwar. Diolch i chwaraewyr y Loteri Genedlaethol. Mi fydd teithiau tywys rheolaidd yn cael ei gynnig yn y tri lleoliad dan arweiniad gwirfoddolwyr a staff Oriel Môn.

Walk at Trearddur Bay, June 2021

"I thoroughly enjoyed the walk, the chance to learn about Kyffin’s art and the areas that were special to him was really interesting. I look forward to more walks in the future." - feedback from the led walk at Trearddur Bay in June.

"Fe wnes i fwynhau’r daith yn fawr iawn, roedd cael cyfle i ddysgu am ardal a gwaith Kyffin yn ddifyr iawn ac edrychaf mlaen at ragor o deithiau tebyg yn y dyfodol." - adborth o'r daith gerdded dan arweiniad ym Mae Trearddur ym mis Mehefin

Who was Sir Kyffin Williams?

Born in Llangefni in 1918, Kyffin Williams is widely regarded as one of the defining Welsh artists of the twentieth century and his paintings depict the ruggedness of Welsh landscapes and coastlines, often in wet, bleak and turbulent weather. Through his sketching and painting ‘en plein air’, he sets a great example of the fact that walking is all about what you wear and can be enjoyed come rain or shine.

Pwy oedd Syr Kyffin Williams?

Wedi’i eni yn Llangefni yn 1918, mae Kyffin Williams yn cael ei ystyried yn eang fel un o artistiaid mwyaf diffiniol Cymru yn yr ugeinfed ganrif ac mae ei baentiadau'n darlunio gerwindeb tirweddau ac arfordiroedd Cymru, yn aml mewn tywydd gwlyb, llwm a chythryblus. Drwy ei fraslunio a'i baentio 'ên plein air', mae'n gosod esiampl wych o'r ffaith bod cerdded yn ymwneud â'r hyn rydych chi’n ei wisgo ac y gellir ei fwynhau bod yn law neu’n hindda.
