English councils will be given access to a multi-billion pound fund for local road improvements under plans unveiled by Transport Secretary Chris Grayling today (Wednesday 5 July).
Joe Irvin, Chief Executive of Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking comments:
“Seeing a greater proportion of funding going to local roads and local decision making is something we’ve been calling for and could have a really positive impact on improving local journeys for people walking and cycling.
“We call on local authorities to use the funding to improve local roads and streets so that they’re better for walking and cycling. Encouraging more people to walk will reduce congestion, improve air quality and be better for our health.”
