The government has committed to a long-term plan to improve walking, just like it has with roads and rail.
A huge thank you to all of our campaigners and supporters, this is a fantastic breakthrough.
Of you signed our petition to David Cameron to make the walk to school
Safer and easier
Living Streets supporters responded to the resulting consultation
More than any other organisation ensuring our voice was heard
We then challenged the government to show how they planned to make this happen, and after extended lobbying of ministers we’ve seen part of the answer: the Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy that has been made into law today.
This is a huge win for us and everyone who’s taken the time to sign petitions, emailed their MP or candidates, written to their paper, responded to consultations and all the other amazing things supporters like you have done.
It wouldn’t have happened without supporters like you.
We will be campaigning to make sure the strategy is the kind of ambitious game changer that’s needed.
Thousands of you have contacted transport minister Robert Goodwill and your MPs asking them to make sure there is funding to back up the strategy. This money is desperately needed to create safe and pleasant walking routes and for community projects that have been shown to up walking levels.
We’ll be stepping up this campaign and in times of austerity that’s not going to be easy, so we’ll be asking for your help to make this happen.
But for now, we think this is a win for walking worth celebrating, and it wouldn’t have happened without supporters like you.
