Stephen Edwards has been appointed Chief Executive of Living Streets. Stephen has been acting as Interim CEO since July 2021 and will take up the permanent post from 11 April, 2022.
Stephen joined Living Streets in 2018, bringing a wealth of public affairs experience having spent 18 years advising charities, companies and trade associations on their public relations and communications strategies. He is currently Chair of Governors at a North London Primary School and Trustee of a number of small charities.
During Stephen’s time as Interim CEO, the charity has seen investment in its work in Scotland double; additional funding for its walk to school programme in England; and changes to the Highway Code to put pedestrians at the top of a new road user hierarchy rolled out across Great Britain. Stephen and the Living Streets team also hosted three events at the COP26 climate change conference in Glasgow, making the case for better places for walking and wheeling.
Stephen Edwards, Chief Executive, Living Streets said:
“It is an honour to take up the role of Chief Executive at Living Streets. Our dedicated staff, supporters, members and volunteer local groups have responded positively and innovatively to the challenges that the last couple of years have presented to the sector. It is a genuine privilege to be leading such a fantastic group of people as we continue to build on all we have achieved together so far.
“There’s no better time to be taking up this new role as we build up to celebrate walking and all the benefits it has to offer during Living Streets’ National Walking Month and Walk to School Week this May.”
Dame Jane Roberts, Chair, Living Streets said:
“Throughout his time as interim CEO and during the recruitment process, Stephen has demonstrated clear evidence of strategic thinking, an effective management style and sound knowledge of the active travel sector.
“This is a fantastic new chapter for Living Streets and I look forward to working with Stephen and colleagues as we make further progress in achieving our mission of a nation where walking is the natural choice for everyday local journeys.”
