Scarborough has been named as home to the UK’s ‘Most romantic walk’, in time for Valentine’s Day.

Jenny Wiles, Regional Director (North East and Yorkshire), Living Streets, said:

“I’m really pleased to see Scarborough taking the title and representing the many great walks the North East and Yorkshire boast.

“The poll was light-hearted but we wanted to get across the simple message that by going for a walk a few times a week people can enjoy noticeable health benefits.

“As we know, physical activity greatly reduces your risk of coronary heart disease so a romantic walk is great for your heart in more ways than one.

“Hopefully the people of Scarborough and those visiting the area will be inspired to take the walk this Valentine’s Day.”

Robert Goodwill MP (Scarborough and Whitby) and Transport Minister, said:

“Scarborough is home to many fantastic walks so I’m thrilled that this one has been recognised nationally.

“We faced competition from some big UK cities but I think it’s thanks to our town’s wonderful views and pedestrian-friendly promenades that we managed to secure the win.

“Walking with a loved one, in a group or with family and friends can do wonders for people’s physical health and mental wellbeing. I’d encourage everyone to get out there and discover their own favourite walk. I look forward to seeing if Scarborough retains the title next year.”

Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking asked 15,000 of its supporters to nominate their favourite UK town or city romantic walks and say why they had chosen it. The entries were narrowed down based on the number of nominations received and the most romantic reasons given, and put up for public vote.

Scarborough fought off competition from Chester, London, Oxford and Glasgow to win, taking 28 per cent of the vote[1]

The Scarborough nomination came from Caroline Rhodes, who said:

“Walk from Scarborough Sea Life centre all along the front, round the cliff, passing Scarborough Spa Theatre and end at The Clock Café for a cup of tea and the best homemade scone I have tasted.

“I have done this walk many times with my husband and daughter. You get lots of beautiful views and meet nice people on the way.”

Notes to editors

We are Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking.

We want to create a walking nation, free from congested roads and pollution, reducing the risk of preventable illness and social isolation and making walking the natural choice. We believe that a walking nation means progress for everyone.

Our ambition is to get people of all generations to enjoy the benefits that this simple act brings and to ensure all our streets are fit for walking.

For more than 85 years we’ve been a beacon for walking. In our early days our campaigning led to the UK’s first zebra crossings and speed limits. Now, our campaigns and local projects deliver real change to overcome barriers to walking and our ground breaking initiatives such as the world’s biggest Walk to School campaign encourage millions of people to walk.
