Double Olympic Triathlon Champion Alistair Brownlee, MBE has been announced as Active Travel Ambassador for Leeds (29 August 2019).
It follows in the footsteps of other regions to have appointed active travel leads: London, Greater Manchester, West Midlands and Sheffield.
Living Streets recommends appointing someone at a senior level to champion walking in its ‘Blueprint for Change’ – a guide for improving towns and cities for walking.
Jenny Wiles, Regional Director (North), Living Streets said:
“This is fantastic news for Leeds. More people walking and cycling will help tackle physical inactivity whilst improving air quality and congestion across the city.
“You don’t have to be a triathlete to be fit and healthy. Simply introducing more walking and cycling into a day can have huge physical and mental health benefits.
“Having someone in post dedicated to walking and cycling can help people make healthier travel choices. We're sure Alistair will inspire people of all ages and abilities to move more.”
