Happy Shoesday

With Happy Shoesday just a few months away, we are meeting people from all walks of life for whom every day is a Shoesday.

Hannah Martinez, is a Footwear Designer for Dune, London. Here's what she told us...

Hannah Martinez

What do you do, and how long have you been doing it?

"I am a footwear designer and ’ve been in the industry for over 10 years now. I’m currently working for Dune, London – I design three of their in-house brands which are sold in Debenhams and House of Fraser stores nationwide. I have been at my current position for just over a year"

How long does it take for one of your designs to go from your brain to the shops?

"It takes roughly six months for a design to go from sketch to store. We begin every new season with a trip to china to visit factories and design new styles. Once the samples come back to us we make any amendments and decide how many pairs of each style we would like to sell in store.

After the factory has finished making the shoes they are then put on a boat and shipped to the UK – it takes the shoes about six weeks to reach us from that point!"

What do you think about first – practicality or attractiveness?

"Attractiveness! My job is to create something beautiful that customers will fall in love with and want to buy! Once my initial samples have returned and I’m happy that the product looks good we then ensure that the shoe fits perfectly."

If you had to choose one pair of happy shoes what would they be?

"I have two favourite pairs:

Missy T-bar platform sandal ‘Head Over Heels by Dune’ for dancing the night away.

And Elize lace-up trainer, also ‘Head Over Heels by Dune’, for a more casual daytime look."

How would a young person get into this line of work?

"I chose to do both Art and Textiles for GCSE which made me realise from a young age that I wanted to do something creative. After taking my A-level Art I decided to go and do a Foundation course in Art & Design. This course was amazing. It really helped me decide what I wanted to do career-wise.

I went to London College of Fashion to take the Cordwainers Footwear Design undergraduate degree. This gave me the skill set and the connections I needed in order to obtain the job of my dreams!"
