As towns and cities around the globe celebrated World Carfree Day on Thursday, 22 September, we headed to Cardiff to see what it feels like when our streets put people first.

Park Place was closed to traffic all day and Living Streets were there to celebrate the benefits of walking and encourage people to make a walking pledge.

In the 20th century too much of our public realm was focussed around the car, there is a definite movement towards smarter towns and cities, designing places around people. Vehicles need no longer define our social status.
