Walk To School Campaign

About half of primary school children are still not regularly walking to school, according to the Department for Transport. The number of cars involved in the school run is increasing and as a nation we are becoming less active. This trend is contributing to increased childhood obesity, urban congestion and air pollution.

Walk to School addresses these issues by encouraging pupils and parents to reconsider their school journey and enjoy the many benefits of walking.

Our key activities

Walk to School week
Takes place every year in May across the UK, and is an established date in the school diary. Each year over two million children take part.

International Walk to School Month
Takes place in over 40 countries, including the UK. It happens in October each year with the aim of making the world a better place in which to walk - one community at a time.

WOW (Walk Once a Week, Walk on Wednesdays....)
Walk to School Week and Month happen twice a year but we want children to walk to school every day. The WOW scheme helps schools to encourage regular walking by giving incentives to children who walk.

About the campaign
Walk to School is organised by Living Streets and ACT Travelwise, and funded by Transport for London, Department for Transport and the Scottish Executive. It has been running since 1994.
