Latest News from Watford

Plans are being progressed for a major redesign of Watford Junction railway station. The hope is that approaches for pedestrians will be improved such that routes follow desire lines and have reasonable priority over traffic including fast acting 'green man' lights. There is also a need for much improved bus interchange facilities at the station with a comfortable waiting area and a centralised bus information point. At a recent public consultation (January 2007) it was evident that most of the planning effort is going into a new link road to feed vehicles into a much expanded car park and to link the station directly to the M1 side of the town. It remains to be seen just what is going to be done to improve things for pedestrians (and for cyclists and bus passengers).

Other issues in Watford are the very slow response times of pedestrian crossing lights and the lack of priority given by both the council and the police to dealing with pavement parking.

It is a pity that Watford, which is only a few miles from the neighboroughing London Boroughs of Harrow and Hillingdon, cannot enjoy the same priority given to pedestrians and bus transport as the London Boroughs. There is a remarkable shift in transport culture as soon as you come over the border. In Watford the motor car still rules!
