I've loved cars since I was a kid, and I especially love my 1961 Plymouth Valiant pictured in the living room I built in my street.
Back when cars looked like this, most residential roads enjoyed many purposes...hanging out, playing, cycling, and some motor traffic.
But these days, people use their cars too much, and so residential roads, nearly all roads only have one purpose: motor traffic conduits.
Most road engineers have encouraged this to happen. One idea they've had wrong from the beginning is to try and segregate cars from people on residential roads, in the interests of 'safety'.
What it's done instead is to create the illusion that residential roads are safe and predictable places to drive through at 30 mph or more. It's no wonder so many kids, animals, and old people get killed by cars on their own streets, because of course, they sometimes get "in the way" of motor traffic!
We no longer segregate people based on the colour of their skin. So why separate people based on their choice of private transport?
People in cars and people on foot can mix. It just takes a little imagination and good design.
