Hebden Bridge is an attractive town in Yorkshire which is a popular place to live and is also popular with tourists. Traffic volumes, especially on the A646 passing through the town, can be expected to grow as mills throughout the Calder valley are converted to apartments. On some stretches of the road pollution levels already exceed what is permitted under EC regulations and Calderdale Council will have to come up with measures to tackle this.

Latest News from Hebden Bridge
After some ten years campaigning on proposals initially put forward by Calderdale Friends of the Earth, we are at last seeing the start of work on partial pedestrianisation of the town centre. Bridge Gate, a narrow street flanked by historic buildings and woefully inadequate or non-existent pavements, will carry only buses (instead of two-way traffic) and St George's Square will be pedestrian only. The whole of the town centre will become a 20 mph zone, although the council regrettably decided against extending this limit to the steep and winding roads which lead from the hilltops into the town.
The challenge now is to extend similar improvements to other Calderdale towns.
