Walk to Work Week 2012 employer's guide

image description

Walk to Work Week is a simple, fun way to get your staff walking to, from and during work.

We're challenging you and other employers to see how many people can get walking from 14–18 May.

The links below will guide you through the challenge, with downloadable resources, information and tips to help you make the most of it at your workplace. If you have any questions about taking part in Walk to Work Week then please get in touch with us: email walkingworks@livingstreets.org.uk or call 020 7377 4900.

Why take part in Walk to Work Week?

Walk to Work Week

Help your workforce get healthier and more active by taking part in Walk to Work Week. Following last year's event:

  • 57% of people felt that their overall level of walking had increased
  • 49% walked some or all of their journey to work five days a week, compared with 27% before Walk to Work Week
  • Half of people were 30 minutes or more physical activity on five or more days per week, compared with under a third before Walk to Work Week.

They also told us that since taking part they feel fitter (45%), healthier (41%) and more active (39%).

Taking part in Walk to Work Week has a whole range of other benefits for your workplace:

  • It contributes to staff health and wellbeing, leading to greater productivity and reduced absenteeism
  • It delivers against CSR objectives
  • It helps meet workplace transport targets
  • It demonstrates a commitment to sustainability
  • It's a fun, company-wide activity.

Using the website during Walk to Work Week

walkthrough

The best way to take part in Walk to Work Week is online through our website where you can take part with colleagues through a workplace group. Not only is it free to use but during the Week you’ll be able to record your walking and take other challenges. Live totalisers and leaderboards will show how much everybody is walking, how many calories you are burning and carbon dioxide has been saved, as well as who the top walkers are.

If you took part last year online then you don’t have to re-register. Your individual account and workplace group still exist so you can simply log back in to take part and invite more people to join you.

If you are new to Walk to Work Week then you need to register, create a group for your workplace and invite your staff to join.

There is a quick demo of how the website works on the Walk to Work Week 2012 page and you can find out more of how to make the most of it from our workplace guide downloadable from the employer’s toolkit above.
