BackTackling pavement parking

There are 28 million cars on the streets of the UK, and for 90% of the time each one of these will be parked. It is not surprising that as car ownership has increased, the pressure for parking spaces has also intensified. In many areas the streets are not wide enough to accommodate all of the drivers who want to park. However, rather than finding somewhere more suitable to park – and continuing their journey on foot – many drivers simply drive up onto the pavement and park there. This can block pavements and prevent passage on foot.

All of us, but particularly those of us with mobility problems, are vulnerable both to pavements obstructed by parked vehicles and also the damage to paving caused by such behaviour. Without proper restrictions on this practice, drivers will continue to encroach on pedestrian space. It should come as no surprise that pavement parking is consistently one of the most important concerns for our local Living Streets groups across the country.

With this in mind Living Streets is delighted to launch a new campaign pack for our volunteers to help them to fight pavement parking. It can be found under ‘campaign packs’ in the tools section of the website. If there isn’t a local Living Streets group where you live, why not get together with like-minded local residents and set one up yourself?
