BackNorth East leads in pledge support

Residents of the North East have shown their commitment to the Living Streets’ Pledge campaign to promote safe, attractive, enjoyable streets for all, with the highest number of pledges hailing from the area.

We have had a fantastic response from all around the UK from Lanarkshire to Belfast and back to London. 12% of our first 150 pledges were from the North East area, illustrating strength of feeling towards making our streets a better place for all that locals there hold. Living Streets has worked on a number of projects in the North East, engaging local communities.

Newcastle City Council showed its commitment to safe, attractive, enjoyable streets, by setting up a unique partnership with Living Streets, over a three year period. Through this partnership and additional work, Living Streets provided training and support, worked with communities across the city (including in Walker and Scotswood) and audited a number of locations to see how conditions for people on foot could be improved.

With Gateshead Council, Living Streets has worked with a number of communities to audit their local high streets and identify ways to improve the experience of walking in their villages.

Newcastle, Gateshead and Sunderland Councils are also taking part in the Big Lottery Funded Fitter for Walking project, which has helped communities in a number of locations (including Byker and Bensham) to improve their walking environment and increase walking levels.
