BackLondon could do better

London Mayor Boris Johnson launched the capital's new transport strategy today which sets out the vision to 2031. The strategy aims to create a clean, green and efficient transport system to make sure Londoners can get from A to B easily.

“With the right mix of policies, I believe we can reduce congestion, reduce emissions, and reduce the overall stress levels of the travelling public. That’s not just because I want to make people happier in their daily commuting – though I do. It’s also because we want London to remain the world’s number one location – as a place to visit, a place to do business, a place to invest.” Boris Johnson, Mayor of London.

The Mayor six goals for transport are to:

    * support economic development and population growth
    * enhance the quality of life for all Londoners
    * improve the safety and security of all Londoners
    * improve transport opportunities for all Londoners
    * reduce transport’s contribution to climate change and improve its resilience
    * support delivery of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and its legacy.

Living Streets is pleased to see a focus in the strategy on increasing walking rates, safety and improving the quality of streets and public spaces. Creating a walkable environment is a key step to making London a world class city for those on foot.

However we now need to see these warm words put into action with strong leadership and setting ambitious targets for a mode shift towards walking.

We are disappointed that the Western Extension zone has been abandoned and have continued concerns about the consequences that re-phasing traffic lights will have on pedestrians.  We further believe that there is an important role for both the Mayor and boroughs to work together to extend 20 mph limits throughout the capital.

Measures such as these cannot be viewed in isolation and are an important part of delivering reduced congestion, improved air quality and creating safe, attractive, enjoyable streets where people want to walk.
