Back20 mph speed limit welcomed

Living Streets welcomes today’s call for a 20 mph speed limit in built up areas from the UK Faculty of Public Health as set out in their joint public health manifesto.

Tony Armstrong, Chief Executive of Living Streets said:

“The UK Faculty of Public Health has joined a growing number of organisations recognising the benefits of people-friendly traffic speeds.  There is now overwhelming evidence on the benefits of 20mph limits where we live, work and play.  While good progress has been made on reducing road casualties across the UK, no one should be satisfied when the equivalent of 60 classrooms full of children were seriously injured or killed on our roads last year.

"Reducing motor traffic speeds on our streets is the single biggest measure which will make them safe and vibrant places.  The Government must use the forthcoming road safety strategy to implement a default 20 mph speed limit in built up areas."
