BackWhy Pledge?

At Living Streets we want to see safe, attractive and enjoyable streets where people want to walk. With the coalition government settled into office, we want to remind them of the importance of adhering to their pre-election green manifestos. To ensure they do this, we need your support in pledging to the new government to work towards safety for pedestrians.

Here are some of the reasons why people have pledged:

For road safety:

“RoadPeace supports those bereaved or injured through road crashes, and campaigns for road danger reduction; we have signed this pledge as we support any measures which result in fewer and slower vehicles on the roads ” RoadPeace, the national charity for road crash victims

For our children:

“So my young children can grow up in an area where their freedom to roam is not constrained by the irresponsible behaviour of adult drivers” Simon Baldrey, Bedfordshire

“My youngest child has one more year before walking to secondary school over busier roads - the speeds are frightening!” Marian Laklia, Kent

For street users:

“Safe streets are essential for those with poor sight and people who cannot move quickly” Pauline Topham, Dundee

“I walk to work each day and would like it to be a more pleasurable experience” Stephen Weight, Warwickshire

“I think it's time that planners and authorities gave priority to walking instead of just giving lip-service to its advantages while continuing to give consideration almost exclusively to the needs of those in vehicles” Colin Wright, Hertfordshire

“Considering almost everyone is a pedestrian, their needs are of surprisingly low consideration in he political decisions. I support the manifesto of Living Streets strongly”  Paul Tweddell, Kent

For the community:

“Walkability = sustainability, clean air, strong communities, healthy children. Communities have been fractured by roads and cars. Where people walk they also care, about the place and each other” Myra James, West Yorkshire

For the environment:

“It looks like progress to reduce CO2 by 42% by the year 2020 is way off target” Sandra Macdowell, Glasgow

“I am interested in being responsible with the environment” Peter Boyd, Belfast

For better places for all:

“Far too much traffic and heavy vehicles on our local streets”  Karen Valentine, Fife

“Because I believe that public spaces are for all, and should be enjoyed by all”  Pat Oddy, North Yorkshire

“I have seen pedestrian access diminishing rather than increasing in recent years” Sandra Knight, Dundee
