BackOur response to 'Designing Streets'

Living Streets' response to the Scottish Government policy document 'Designing Streets'

Keith Irving, Living Streets Scotland Manager said:

“We are pleased that the Scottish Government has recognised that it is essential we change the way our streets are designed. Putting people and place before the movement of motor vehicles is a positive step forward in helping us to tackle the obesity epidemic, reduce our carbon footprint and revitalise our local economy by encouraging more people out onto the streets in their towns and communities.

“There is however, a world of difference between the welcome aspirations of 'Designing Streets' and the reality on too many of our streets. 'Designing Streets' will only be a success if the design principles are strictly enforced, especially when our existing streets are re-designed”

“We particularly welcome the commitment to make 20mph the norm on residential streets, but local authorities need to ensure this is the case for all residential streets, not just in new developments.”
