Walking Plan Campaign: A recent comment from...

It's disgraceful that so little effort is put into space reallocation. It's easy to spot vast areas of public highway unnecessarily allocated to vehicles, when reallocation to people on foot would make walking more comfortable, more relaxed, and much, much safer. Giving more space to walking and less to traffic will reward walkers every time they step out - come on Ken, isn't it time you REALLY went for it?

In 2004 the Mayor launched The Walking Plan for London, aiming to make London 'one of the most walkable cities in the world by 2015.'

London Living Streets welcomes the Walking Plan. But we are concerned that it sells walking short.

For example, we believe the Plan lacks ambition. A principal target is to increase the modal share of walking for trips under two miles by 10% by 2015. As a means to improve health and cut down noise and pollution, the target should be much higher.

The Plan has also missed many opportunities. For example, in central London congestion charging began a year before the Plan was launched. But the Plan makes no attempt to maximise the reduction in motor traffic to reallocate space to people on foot.

The simplest way to pledge your support is by signing the petition, which will be presented to the Mayor in the autumn.
