Priorities for Oxford Street are topsy-turvy
London Living Streets has expressed some concerns about plans for Oxford Street. The focus of attention should be on creating a safe, attractive, relaxing place for people to visit - with the needs of pedestrians prioritised. Such an approach would be in line with the ethos of Manual for Streets - government guidance that puts a value on the emphasis of place, and not automatically through movement.

Pedestrian Oxford Street is first step towards a central pedestrian network
In response to London Living Streets survey, which found that over 90% of people prefer Oxford Street without motor vehicles, Jenny Jones, Green Party London Assembly Member, has called for the pedestrianisation of this iconic street to be the first step towards a Central London Pedestrian Network, linking London's world famous parks and squares with the river.

London Living Streets has given a warm but cautious welcome to new initiatives to encourage more people to get out of their cars, off crowded public transport and walk. However, the package of measures announced today by the Mayor is heavily focussed on cycling, missing a chance to enable many more Londoners to choose to walk.
